It was a firmer day on the commodity markets yesterday, after newly released macro-economic data in the US came in largely within expectations, easing some concerns about imminent interest rate hikes and pushing the US Dollar lower. The London Robusta Coffee, Cocoa, Corn, Soybean, Sugar, Wheat, Gold, Silver, Palladium and Platinum markets ended the day on a firmer note, while the New York Arabica Coffee markets ended the day on a softer note. The day starts with the US Dollar trading at 1.320 Sterling, at 1.138 to the Euro and with the US Dollar buying 5.175 Brazil Real.
The London market started the day trading in softer territory, whilst the New York market started the day trading on a firmer note. Both markets registered a softer track in the early morning session, before finding support to rebound from the morning lows and trend back towards par. The New York market hit a ceiling for the early morning session early in the day, to introduce sellers at the highs, the choppy trade in New York continued, whilst the London market set a range. As the afternoon progressed, the London market continued on a modest firmer path, in positive territory. The New York market dropped back and set a softer track to see the market set a new low for the day, the market found support near to the lows to recover most of the earlier losses and settle on a modest near to unchanged softer note at the close, while the London market settled on a firmer note, with most of the earlier gains of the day intact.
The London market ended the day on a positive note, with 65.52% of the earlier gains of the day intact, while the New York market ended the day on a modest near to unchanged softer note with 11.67% of the earlier losses of the day intact. This mixed close for the markets, with the New York market settling on a softer note recovering most of the earlier losses of the day and the London market settling on a firmer note, with most of the earlier gains of the day intact, might see the markets set for a follow through steady start to early trade today, against the prices set yesterday, as follows:
