It was a softer day on the commodity markets on Friday, after a stronger-than-expected US jobs report reinforced expectations that the US Federal Reserve will keep interest rates higher for longer amid inflation concerns. The Coffee, Cocoa, Corn, Soybean, Sugar, Wheat, Gold, Silver, Palladium and Platinum markets ended the day on a softer note. The day starts with the US Dollar trading at 1.334 Sterling, at 1.152 to the Euro and with the US Dollar buying 5.172 Brazil Real.

The London market started the day on Friday trading on a modest near to unchanged firmer note, whilst the New York coffee market opened the day trading on a firmer note, the markets quickly gained support to trend firmer setting a new high for the day during the early morning session, before encountering resistance early to drop back and trend below par for the remainder of the day. As the afternoon progressed, the markets encountered downward pressure, leading to a bearish trajectory for the afternoon session. Despite the downward pressure, a small degree of buying support came to the fore during the afternoon session to see the New York market recover most of the earlier losses of the day, before a lack of support at the top saw the markets drop back and into a softer path for the remainder of the day. The London market recovered marginally from the day’s low, while the New York market recovered most of the earlier losses gaining support near to the close to settle on a modest near to unchanged softer note at the close.

The London market ended the day on a negative note, with 64.29% of the earlier losses of the day intact, while the New York market ended the day on a likewise negative note with 16.88% of the earlier losses of the day intact.  This softer close for the markets and with the London markets retaining most of the earlier losses to settle near to the lows of the day in a comparatively good volume day and the New York market recovering from the day’s lows, might lead one to think that the markets are due for a hesitant start to early trade today, against the prices set on Friday, as follows:
