It was a mixed day on the commodity markets yesterday, as the markets await key US economic data due to be released later this week to assess the US Federal Reserve’s interest rate trajectory, whilst tensions continue to rise between the US and its trade partners. The New York Arabica Coffee, Corn, Soybean, Sugar, Wheat, Gold and Platinum markets ended the day on a firmer note, while the London Robusta Coffee, Cocoa, Silver and Palladium markets ended the day on a softer note. The day starts with the U.S. Dollar trading at 1.290 Sterling, at 1.080 the Euro and with the US Dollar buying 5.739 Brazil Real.

The New York and London markets started the day yesterday trading to the north of par on very firm notes respectively, carrying through the momentum from the close on Tuesday. The markets continued to trade in positive territory, making significant gains throughout the morning session, buoyed by support and lack of selling pressure. As the afternoon progressed, the markets continued to attract support, with the New York market trending firmer to set a new high and hit a ceiling during the afternoon session, whilst the London market followed suit to likewise set a new high for the day. The New York market dropped back from the day’s highs late in the session to before finding renewed support before the close to settle on a firmer note with some of the earlier gains of the day intact. The London market dropped back from the day’s highs during the late afternoon session to encounter resistance and see the market drop back through par and settle on a modest near to unchanged softer note at the close.

The London market ended the day on a modest near to unchanged softer note with 5% of the earlier losses of the day intact, while the New York market ended the day on a very firm note, with 57.32% of the earlier gains of the day intact. This mixed close for the markets, with the London market recovering all of the earlier losses to settle on a modest near to unchanged note at the close, and the New York market settling on a firmer note at the close albeit back from the day’s highs, might see the markets set for a follow through hesitant steady start to early trade today, against the prices set yesterday, as follows:
